Smart Car mpg

Smart car mpg: better than you think

The Smart car mpg was about 37 mpg when it was first introduced into the American market. This was a letdown since they were getting over 60 mpg in Europe. The reason for the difference is the additional restrictions and equipment that is mandated by the US government.

This car is propelled by a 1.0 liter or 61 cubic inch motor. This engine is capable of a 0 to 60 acceleration in 12.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically controlled but maxes out at 90 mph.

The most common Smart car in America is from Daimler. Mercedes has the market share along with Daimler in Europe at the present time, but Mercedes has recently been given permission to sell their version in America.

Next on this stage is the VW Smart car. Their version is touting 141 mpg with 60g/km of CO@ emissions. It does have a larger engine at 1.2 liter, 4 cylinder direct injection gasoline powered. VW is also developing a 1.2 liter common rail diesel along with an electric version that is in conjunction with Toshiba. The first gasoline powered Smart VW is expected to be sold in England for about 6000 British pounds starting in 2011. This will still be a 2 passenger car and appears to be longer than their first version but shorter than the current smart cars sold by the other companies.

The competition is getting stiff in Europe. If we can just make the American government lift the requirements that protect the Big Three so the Smart Car MPG that is sold in America be close to that of Europe’s.
